Polysorbate is a harmless sorbitol ingredient in personal care products. However, it is commonly diluted with ethylene oxide, also known as polysorbate 20 or tween 20, to become an emulsifier for cosmetic products (mix oil and water). When polysorbate is being treated with ethylene oxide, it can then become contaminated with a potentially dangerous byproduct - 1,4-dioxane - an animal carcinogen that has the capability to penetrate into the skin.
