Types of Incense in Bhutan

In Bhutan, you will mainly find two types of incense that are Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian incense. When performing rituals and offerings to certain gods and goddesses like medicine Buddha, Mother Tara and Avalokitesvara and while appeasing Nagas Veg incense is offered.

Medicinal Ingredients

Ingredients used for making Veg incense- juniper, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, green and black cardamom, saffron, white and red sandalwood, agar, spikenard, and other aromatic herbs.

People offer non-veg incense for general well beings, rituals, offerings and cleansing and purification. Non-veg incense stick includes ingredients such as- juniper, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, green and black cardamom, saffron, white and red sandalwood, agar, spikenard, pangolin, alcohol, yeast, Nargi (seashell), and other aromatic herbs and resin (Guggul, Frankincense). In the making of non-veg incense, they add a natural dye/colour (Red).

Recommendation

  • Grade A and B incense are suitable for general well beings, offerings, rituals, cleansing, purification, and room fresheners.
  • Grade C, D, and E incense are suitable for general well beings, offerings, relaxing body, reading, resting, meditation and yoga.
  • Jaju Veg incense is suitable for Medicine Buddha, Mother Tara, Avalokitesvara rituals and appeasing Nagas.
