Photosensitizing Essential Oils

Photosensitizing Essential Oils

Note: Bhutan Lemongrass Oil does not contain any photodynamic agent.

There are some essential oils that carry a photodynamic agent that release free radicals. These free radicals are very reactive to UV light, and when applied to the skin, it will create a skin burn. The skin burns because it has become photosensitized, which is why we labeled them as photosensitizing oils.

The phototoxicity that occurs is not directly caused by the oils themselves, but an effect of the interaction between UV light and the skin to which these oils have been applied.

Photosensitizing only when they are obtained through cold-pressing, not when they are obtained through steam distillation.
